Waterfront public spaces and park in Heraklion (GR) - Europan 4:

 

Socrates Stratis won in 1996 Europan 4, teamed with Kyriakos Koundouros on the Heraklion site in Greece.
The change of industrial sites on the sea, allows creating a seafront. The competition proposal combines specific and non-specific plans, leaving flexibility in future urban development and playing upon demarcation and difference, Between public and private. The architectural operations are “generators of difference”, designed to increase the town’s Complexity and specificity.
The implementation project according to the competition concepts, proposes ways of reactivating existing urban limits at the waterfront area and Reprograms the public space in order to be shared by different users -Local / trans-local-. This was achieved by introducing new public program at strategic positions in a whole landscape: rehabilitation centre, internet café, public baths…
