Housing and parking on the roof, Nijmegen (NL), Europan 2
Bjarne Mastenbroek won in 1991 Europan 2, “Living in the city”, teamed with Dick van Gamerenon the Nijmegen site (NL). This competition project has been followed by an implementation of 57 housing units with a parking on the roof.
The competition project opts to reject construction along the preserved built-up areas at the outside of the block with a landscaped garden which occupies the building-free interstices - Emptiness.
The implemented project concept concerns also the removal of barriers. Two entrance gates interrupt the long north-west oriented street facade with access to the intense street, and make the garden clearly visible from the street.
The “head-gate” contains the car-elevator that transports cars to the roof automatically. This way a barrier of cars on the street, or an unattractive, expensive underground car park is being avoided - Parking and public space. The access to the high quality apartments for the elderly is via short galleries, which give a strong sequence of building-mass and facades. Parking and programmes make easier the integration with the public property - Multi mobility.
