Urban study and housing units, Marseille (F), Europan 6

Jens Metz, winner of Europan 6, “In between cities” in Marseille (F) in 2001, developed from urban to buildings some of his winning ideas.
On a site in trransformation between the city and the harbour, the competition project is based on an analysis of the existing urban structure and its potential developments. A strategy of substitution of open blocks around a central park, that seeks to maintain the memory of the place aims progressively to transform the district over time as urban “Fields”.
The implementation project, at the scale of a block, considers the link between the fixed container that forms a shell or stucture, and the content as a flexible and adjustable element - Cargo-, on both the wider urban and individual building scale. The notion of a place of Passage is understood not only in spatial terms, but also temporally, as a process of alteration of Empty space.
