Arbol square in Valencia (E), Europan 2

 

Vicente Guallart and María Díaz won Europan 2, “Living in the city”, in 1991 on the site of Valencia (E). “Carmen’s neighbourhood is in ruins”. The competition project works on the district’s dense historic grain by creating a services road that follows the existing land layout, completing a post-war outline and reinforcing the residential character of the arable land grid - Interaction.
In the study following the competition, the project includes an operation on and around the ruins of the old Arab walls, a student accomodation project and a creche. The city needs to provide signs to help people understand and know its history - Shared spaces. With the help of multimedia technologies, the architect fullfils Victor Hugo’s dream of persuading stones to speak. Nowadays, with the new techniques, it is possible to construct complex geometries, artifical natures as Mountains, that create hybrid habitable environments that are also complex and stimulating.
