Residential platforms (NL), Europan 2

Pierre Gautier was winner of the 1991 Europan 2 competition, “Living in the city”, teamed with Tania Concko on the Zaanstad site (NL), which culminated in an exemplary urban construction.
Located along the river Zaan in the North of Amsterdam, the competition project exploits the massive dimensions of the old industrial buildings by the water -Identity and Environment -. It proposes a division where canals transform the blocks into floating urban platforms, which seem floating thanks to half buried parking.
The implemented project starts from the competition project’s division concept in platforms. A walkway runs from the town centre straight along the Zaan while floating bridges on the cross-district canals link the promenade to back street - Scales -. Inside the platforms, the buildings stand side by side but separate, unaligned, autonomous structures creating Flexible spaces of domestic life with their own specific qualities.
