Conversion of convent in Cagliari (I), Europan 4
Andrea de Eccher won the Europan 4 competition, “Constructing the city upon the city”, on the site of Cagliari (I) in 1996 with Giorgio Girardi. The project was implemented in 2000 with a third architect Giuseppe De Carlo. They founded OP Architetti Associati.
The competition project proposes a local park to create urban relations and connect the hill with the town centre. The quarantine building is converted to accommodate cultural and recreational activites and a few commercial buildings restore Sant’Elia Avenue’s role as a neighbourhood centre.
As completed, the conversion of the Cagliari quarantine centre into a social centre and Cultural space avoids faithul reconstruction, opting instead to recompose both pre-existing elements and new parts, whilst keeping them entirely distinct even in the detail, thereby establishing a dialectical relation between historical legacy and the building’s new role - New in old -. Planning a public space is often quite a complex challenge, which involves configuring places of social interaction, multiple and dynamic types of use, and giving a meaning to an empty space - Urban voids-.The structure houses a selection of very different activities, which mean that it is in permanent use.
