Urban and residential development in Barakaldo (E), Europan 6
Javier Fresneda and Javier Sanjuán teamed with Javier Peña, won in 2001 Europan 6, “In-between cities”, on the Baracaldo site (E).
In the suburb of Bilbao, in a strong urban mutation, the competition project maximizes the area given over to common land and proposes to the inhabitants a new landscape - Time’s effects. Several towers stand on a platform, which includes publics viewing points - Interlaced values.
The project in study is on a site in the north-east, former industrial area where the removal of the facilities opens the way to linking the housing areas to the sea. The competition strategy of freeing the area for public space is all the more relevant to the new site. The new plaza becomes a new urban centre along the waterfront, providing a place for socialising, shopping and leisure - Density / Intensity. The tower and the folded ground shape an architecture on the move - Geographical landmark.
